What size backlight do I need?

I need to replace the LCD backlight in Dell laptop I have, but I want to make sure I'm getting the right sized bulb; so are the ratings (15", 17", etc) when applied to the backlight, the measurement of the screen diagonally, like some screens/TVs are done; or is it the actual width of the screen, which would be the length of the bulb?
