How can I back up a whole hard drive while still maintaining the original format and not using windows copy?

Might try a simple Ubuntu boot disk. If you go to the Ubuntu site, you can get a thumb drive image- just download it and run the installer to get it on a thumb drive. Restart your computer with the drive inside and copy your data off to your backup device.
